University's lecturer guilty of forgery

"allafrica.com", Mauritius on 28nd September 2011 : A Kenyan lecturer at Umutara Polytechnic University, was yesterday found guilty of using forged academic transcripts and sentenced to eight months in prison by the Nyagatare Intermediary Court. Peter Mawae who taught communication skills at the university since 2008, claimed to hold a Masters Degree in French from Kenyatta University in Kenya. He was arrested last week. Prosecutors told court that their investigations proved that Mawae never studied at Kenyatta University.The presiding judge, Sam Rupia, said that Mawae applied for a job, got it, worked and earned a salary using forged transcripts.

Fake University's website shut down

It was feared the website, which promoted a fictitious university, was being used to rip-off unsuspecting applicants, particularly in the Far East. Investigations made by Somerset County Council trading standards have resulted in the domain name and site being removed by officers of the Metropolitan Police specialist e-crime unit. "I’m pleased that swift action was taken to remove this outrageous fake university site," said Cabinet Member, Cllr David Hall. "I hope this is the last we will see of the fake Glastonbury University, but it may well reappear under another name."

"dailytimes.com.pk", Pakistan on 28nd September 2011 : A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC), comprising Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh and Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik on Tuesday, while accepting a petition, restrained former MPA Pir Walayat Shah Khagga from taking part in bye-polls. The petitioner, Nazar Muhammad Fatyana, submitted in his petition that an LHC election tribunal on August 18, had disqualified Khagga, MPA from PP-220 Sahiwal, for having a fake BA degree and ordered fresh elections to fill the vacant seat……Fatyana submitted that the election tribunal for the verification of the degree had appointed a local commission to examine the degree of the respondent MPA. The commission also declared Khagga’s degree as bogus.

"allafrica.com", Mauritius on 20th September 2011 : The number of fake universities operating in the country has risen from 44 to 51, National Universities Commission (NUC) has alerted. According to the weekly news bulletin of NUC, eight of the universities had been taken to court, while some are currently undergoing investigations. The eight illegal universities, either in court or currently being investigated, according to the Executive Secretary Julius Okojie, are National University of Nigeria, Keffi, Nasarawa State; North Central University, Oturkpo, Benue State and Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, Enugu State.

The Capital has bagged the dubious distinction of playing host to the largest number of illegal educational institutes in the country……The K. R. Mangalam Global Institute of Management in Greater Kailash, for instance, informed this reporter (posing as an MBA aspirant) that their MBA degree did not require AICTE approval as it was offered by Mysore University, which is UGC recognised. Similarly, the FOSTIIMA Business School in South Extension, a five-year-old institute that boasts being set up by seven alumni of IIM Ahmedabad, also said its MBA degree was legal as it was offered through a tieup with Pondicherry University.

"vietnamnet.vn", Vietnam on 19th September 2011 : Police have confirmed that Deputy Minister of Health, Cao Minh Quang, used a fake doctoral degree. Investigators from the Internal Political Security Department under the Ministry of Public Security, confirmed that Deputy Minister Quang has yet to obtain the doctoral degree in pharmacy as he claimed. The investigation of Quang’s diploma was conducted after a resident in HCM City, Ngo Minh Nho, accused Quang of falsely claiming that he has a PhD in Pharmacy.

GSP DG in trouble over complaints about corruption, nepotism and incompetence

"dailytimes.com.pk", Pakistan on 22nd September 2011 : ……GSP Staff Association President Ghulam Nabi Raisani, Muhammad Khalid Khan, Daud Khan, Muhammad Tahir Khan Jadoon and others told Daily Times that there were lots of complaints about corruption, nepotism and incompetence of GSP DG Dr Imran Ahmed Khan. Dr Imran has been misusing his seat for corruption due to which majority of the officers in the department are against him, they said, adding, the DG due to DG’s conflict with the staff and other officers the department has become stagnant…..Officers of the GSP have given a written statement that Dr Imran was not eligible to become DG because in his ACR there were two marks less due to which he made a fake certificate from a university and prepared new ACRs from irrelevant persons.

Fake university uncovered by Italian police

"lhrtimes.com", Pakistan on 16th September 2011 : Italian police on Friday said they discovered a fake university in the north of the country where around 10 students were paying around 7,000 euros ($9,600) for a worthless, unrecognised degree. The university in Verona called “Carolus Magnus” (Charlemagne) was founded in 2005 in Rome by several people that belonged to a cultural association, which later transferred its headquarters to Verona, police said in a statement. The university offered courses in “art and entertainment management” or “economics and business management” and assured it was registered with other public and private universities, none of which were known to Italy’s education ministry.

Trio accused of making bogus certificates and degrees

"daijiworld.com", India on 17th September 2011 : Three people, accused of making fake educational certificates and degrees, were arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, police said Saturday. Govind, Ankit and Rajendra – all in their late 30s – were nabbed from Bramapuri area Friday night following a joint operation by the Special Operations Group and the district police. "We raided a hideout and recovered over 500 fake degrees, certificates and mark sheets of law, engineering, business administration and other programmes," police inspector Alok Sharma told reporters in Meerut, some 450 km from here.

"news.sl", Sierra Leone on 15th September 2011 : Local tabloids say the Principal of the Virtues International Academy Mr. Idrissa Barthalowen Sesay in Freetown has disclosed that an applicant who applied for the position of teaching in his school submitted a fake certificate. According to reports, James Augustus Showers applied to teach physics and mathematic and the certificate he submitted bears the name of Njala University and was signed in 2005 by Professor Author Porter as Vice Chancellor.

Hospital exposes doctor with fake qualification

"mumbaimirror.com", India on 13th September 2011 : At a time when the government continues to form rules to curb sex determination tests, Sion hospital has come across a doctor who submitted a fake work experience certificate to enable him to practise as a radiologist in Rajasthan. This fraud was exposed when the chief medical officer of the hospital in Rajasthan sent the certificate to Sion hospital for verification. As per new guidelines, without a mandatory one year’s experience in a renowned hospital, even a qualified radiologist cannot perform sonographies, commonly used in sex determination tests.
