“bdnews24.com”, Bangladesh on 27th December 2010 : Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested one in Manikganj with fake certificates. The arrestee was identified as Tusher Ahmed, 35, son of Rashed Ali of Usutia village of Manikganj Sadar Upazila. Acting on a tip-off, RAB conducted a special drive at Municipal Super Market of Sadar Bus Stand area on Monday at around 2pm…….RAB have seized fake certificates of SSC (Secondary School Certificate), HSC (High School Certificate), National University and freedom fighters. Three computers and a printer were also confiscated.

HRD panel to probe fake institute scam

“The Telegraph”, India on 22nd December 2010 : The HRD ministry has decided to set up a two-member committee to probe a fake institute at IIT Kharagpur and the alleged complicity of the premier engineering college’s faculty members and officials…..They will examine complaints from students of the Institution of Electrical Engineering (IEE), the fake institute that was running on the Kharagpur campus with the alleged connivance of some IIT authorities. A.K. Ghosh, a senior faculty member and former chief vigilance officer of the IIT, was president of the fake institute, which did not have any recognition from the All India Council of Technical Education. The institute was offering diploma courses in electrical engineering and was managed by J.K. Tiwary, who had nothing to do with the IIT but lured students to the IEE claiming it was a branch of the top engineering school.

“Deccan Chronicle”, India on 20th December 2010 : Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) has suspended three doctors for unethical actions, which include making false claims in advertisements and practicing with an unrecognized diploma…….The registrar, Mr K. Satyanarayana Murty, said that Dr B. Jagadish of Medi-Kid Children’s Hospital, Ameerpet, has been also suspended for three months for practicing as a paediatrician for several years with an unrecognised post-graduate diploma (DCH, Vienna). “Despite being just an MBBS, the doctor had been projecting himself as a paediatrician.”

Fake credentials used to grab nursing licenses

“Sun-Sentinel.com”, USA on 20th December 2010 : At least nine people obtained licenses in the past year to work in Florida as nurses, even though the credentials they used to get them were fake, according to documents obtained . One person has been criminally charged. They were among more than 30 who applied for licenses with transcripts from the Academy for Practical Nursing and Health Occupations in West Palm Beach, even though they had not finished or never attended the school…….The woman who obtained the LPN certificate, Huberle Gregoire, 51, of suburban West Palm Beach, was charged Aug. 3 with practicing medicine without an active license, a felony. Gregoire paid $18,000 in 2008 for the academy’s 17-month program but flunked out in 2009. Even so, she got a West Virginia license in December 2009 that she used to get a Florida license, sheriff’s reports say.

Student pleads guilty to faking his way into Harvard

“Mail Online”, United Kingdom on 17th December 2010 : A student who conned his way into Harvard University by doctoring test scores, copying essays and forging letters of recommendation, has been given a ten-year probationary sentence. Adam Wheeler, 24, earlier pleaded to multiple counts of larceny, identity fraud, and other charges. The con artist was also ordered to pay back $45,806 to Harvard for the prize money, grants, and financial aid he received by weaving an intricate web of lies to get into the Boston school. According to the Boston Globe, Harvard began investigating Wheeler after a professor who was reviewing his application for a Rhodes and Fulbright Scholarship realized he had plagiarized another student’s work. The university discovered Wheeler had forged his Harvard transcript to make himself a straight-A student for his scholarship application.

“Toronto Sun”, Canada on 16th December 2010 : A former senior Alberta bureaucrat sent to prison for 3-1/2 years for bilking $634,000 from AADAC is out after serving just seven months, QMI Agency has learned. Documents obtained Wednesday from the Parole Board of Canada show Lloyd Carr, 46, was granted both day parole and full parole in a decision made on Sept. 22, five months after he began serving his April 16 sentence……The auditor general also learned Carr had a prior criminal record for theft and did not have a university degree in social work as he had claimed in his job application. Just before Carr’s sentencing, it was learned he had lied about running a painting business and was actually working as a mental health clinician in Flin Flon, Man., after getting the job using a bogus university degree.

“seattlepi.com”, USA on 16th December 2010 : Five state troopers investigated and disciplined for using bogus college diplomas to gain pay raises have sued the state, claiming they were defamed. Filing a lawsuit earlier this month in King County Superior Court, the State Patrol troopers claim their reputations were stained in 2008 when the patrol released details of a probe into allegations that they had obtained bunk college degrees to gain pay raises. In the suit, the troopers – Bryan Ensley, Daniel Mann, Gabriel Olson, Dennis Tardiff and Spike Unruh – each claim to hold degrees from Internet-based colleges that award credit based on “life experience.”

Wednesday, Fruitland Park Police Chief Mark Isom resigned from the police force and now he’s working on a plea deal. The city, Isom and prosecutors are being tight-lipped, but WFTV confirmed today that Isom is expected to admit to his wrongdoing to keep himself out of jail. Isom handed in his resignation letter Wednesday morning, just one day after being charged with attempted official misconduct…….The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office have been investigating Isom since WFTV broke the story earlier this year that he paid for two bogus degrees from a fake university.

Three Nigerians face law for setting fake educational institutes

“234next”, Nigeria on 15th December 2010 : Three Nigerians were yesterday jailed for a total of 18-and-a-half years for setting up fake educational institutions to help illegal immigrants remain in the United Kingdom. The UK Border Agency’s London Immigration Crime Team, told the prosecution that its investigations revealed the dirty deals of the three, which include a husband and wife, Tiamiyu and Christiana Bello, aged 75 and 67 respectively, and a 39-year-old solicitor, Adeyinka Adeniran……The UK Border’s Agency said its raid on Mr. And Mrs. Bello’s office, which was registered to the address of “Academic College of Education” and the “Academic College of Training and Recruitment”, institutions for which the Bellos were the principals, led to the seizures of documents.

“mlive.com”, USA on 13th December 2010 : A former Western Michigan University researcher and former United Airlines pilot, who claimed credentials as a cardiologist, has been exposed a fake physician. Hired in 2004, William Hamman was on the WMU’s payroll through this past February when he had concluded his work for the university’s Center of Excellence for Simulation Research……However, United Airlines grounded him in August after his medical and doctoral degrees evaporated like contrails of the jets he flew. He resigned in June as an educator and researcher at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, after credentials check revealed discrepancies, a hospital spokeswoman said.

“KashmirDispatch.com”, India on 12th December 2010 : In another glaring case of nepotism in University of Kashmir, the son of a senior official at the University was appointed after administration ‘violated’ the appointment criteria for adjusting the ‘favorite’ candidate. Syed Suhaib Hassan, son of the Registrar of the university Professor Syed Fayaz Ahmad, is accused of providing ‘fake’ experience certificate from a Malaysian company, forcing Musavir Munawar Khan, one of the candidates to move court against the appointment. Musavir , who has done MCA from Aligarh Muslim University in 2006 and worked with Directorate of Information Technology and Support System (IT&SS) since 2008 at the relevant position; in his application before the High Court, he has accused the University administration of bending eligibility criteria for accommodating Registrar’s son.

“The Express Tribune”, Pakistan on 05th December 2010 : As the saga of fake degrees continues, the lawyers’ community has now come under the limelight after revelations that the law degree of Shahbaz Ahmed Rajput, former Joint Secretary of Rawalpindi District Bar Association, was alleged to be fake…….Later, Rawalpindi District Bar filed a writ petition against him in Lahore, where the court disposed off the case and directed the respondent Shahbaz Ahmed to submit his educational certificate to the Rawalpindi Bar, but he was still reluctant to submit his educational documents. While giving further details about the details of the case, Anjum said that when Punjab Bar council started an inquiry about his degree, it was found to be fake.
